YOUTH FOOTBALL

TECHNIQUE over scheme:

We say that, “plays are only as good as the players running them”.  There are thousands of plays, formations, etc. out there for teams to utilize.  We will focus on developing our player’s technique over “fancy” schemes and plays.  The play book is wide open for our teams and coaches to utilize, but our players will be extremely disciplined & sound at all aspects of playing the game of football.  We will spend ample time in our practices on rep-ing stance, start, form, feet, and knowing where to be.  Practices will be very organized, intense, fast paced and planned out.  Proper progression is the key to good practices and efficient learning. Although we will “hit” a lot, we will never just “smash and crash”.  Our tackling drills will be controlled & game like, not just two players trying to run the other over; although “trucking” another player happens it is rare & most tackling happens in space with multiple players involved.  We will focus on sound technique, pursuit angles and TEAM tackling! The Jr. Mustangs youth football program utilizes and teaches “leverage style tackling” i.e. Rugby style where you use your shoulders with “wrapping up”.  The Seattle Seahawks of the NFL have created the “hawk tackling technique” that we will implement and teach within our program.  Our coaches will still be certified through USA Football as we believe they have many great resources but we do not believe that the “heads up” tackling technique taught through USA Football is realistic or even the most safe way to tackle and get the head out of tackling.
